Effect of Collagen Dressing on Diabetic Wound Healing - A Pilot Study -

Abstract

|
To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of collagen dressing with that of conventional dressing materials, in the management of diabetic foot ulcers. From October 2011 to May 2012, 20 patients with diabetic foot ulcers were randomized to either the control group with conventional dressings (n=10) or the experimental group with collagen dressing (Colladerm) (n=10). Weekly assessments containing wound size and depth, wound characteristics, adverse events, and gross photograph were performed. With start of treatment, percentages of reduction in terms of wound size and depth, percentage of increment of healthy granulation tissue were noted for each patient in both groups. By week 3, the mean percentage of reduction of wound area was 73.7% in the experimental group and 43.9% in the control group (P=0.096). The mean percentage of reduction of wound depth was 72.8% in the experimental group and 51.2% in the control group (P=0.756). Also, the mean percentage of increment of healthy granulation tissue area was 61.5% in the experimental group and 49.3% in the control group (P=0.344). Collagen dressing has a potential to accelerate the diabetic wound healing.
